Description:
Kooragang Wetlands on Ash Island is made up of a high diversity of wetlands, including mangroves, saltmarsh, mudflats, sandy beaches, and rainforest remnants. 9km north of Newcastle CBD, it is the largest single estuarine reserve in NSW and is part of the Hunter River. The Reserve is a wetland mecca for migratory shorebirds from the Northern Hemisphere and is important for roosting and feeding. These bird species include the Bar-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, Terek sandpiper, and Eastern Curlew. Over 200 bird species use the site, a figure that represents 25% of all species known in Australia and is ideal for bird watching enthusiasts.
