Coalcliff is located on the Illawarra escarpment, which forms a dramatic backdrop for the Illawarra region. The railway line in this area crosses typical escarpment topography - steep slopes in between the base of cliffs and the coastline. The climate is warm temperate, with maximum rainfall in autumn and winter.
