Description:Mungo National Park covers 27,847 hectares in the far western corner of NSW. This park is the focal point of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area, which has a record of Aboriginal life stretching back over 60,000 years. The remarkable Walls of China, a crescent-shaped dune eroding over time, is a striking feature of the park. Wind and water have carved spectacular fragile formations of sand and clay. Erosion has uncovered extensive evidence of the Aboriginal occupation of this area. There is a National Parks & Wildlife Service visitor centre at the entrance to the park which is open every day. Accommodation is at the shearers’ quarters (bookings required), one of two car-based camping areas (with room for caravans), or Mungo Lodge (privately owned, adjacent to the park). A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk gives all visitors access to view the Walls of China. Short walking tracks have signs that highlight a variety of features within the park. The park is located approx 150 km north-east of Wentworth via Buronga along the Arumpo Road, or 147 km north-west of Balranald along the Ivanhoe Road. All roads are unsealed and are impassable after rain.
