Kurri Kurri is 15 mins from Cessnock and the Pokolbin Wine Country, and 15 mins from historic Maitland, half an hour from Newcastle, one hour from Port Stephens & Nelson Bay, and sits at the head of the F3 freeway - 1.5 hrs. drive from Sydney. Mining is the primary enterprise here. Coal mines were first established in 1900 and quickly lead to the development of the town. Kurri also has an aluminum smelter.
