Description:The Marble Bar was originally built by George Adams in 1893 at the site of the Tattersall’s Hotel. The decoration was carried out in the richest style of 15th century Italian Renaissance: the capitals of the columns are solid bronze in Corinthian style; the walls are faced with Italian, Belgian & African marble; the bar counters & rear shelving made of American walnut with cedar joineries. Julian R Ashton was commissioned to paint 18 rural scenes with nudes, for which the Marble bar became famous. Fourteen of the original paintings still remain in the bar. In 1968 the hotel closed down, but a preservation order was placed on the Marble Bar. It was then meticulously deconstructed, piece by piece, before being reconstructed in the Sydney Hilton Hotel and reopened in 1973. This date also marked the first time that women were allowed into the bar as patrons.
