Description:
Built in 1882 and the city of Newcastle's most historic and visual landmark. Fort Scratchley is situated atop Flagstaff Hill, overlooking the Tasman Sea and the Hunter River and is located just a short walk from the Newcastle central business district Fort Scratchley was the only Australian fort to engage in military action in WW2 and is now a Maritime and Military Museum. The Newcastle Region Maritime Museum collection is housed within the grounds. Fort Scratchley's features include underground gun emplacements and tunnels, defence structure, barracks, dry moat, feature wall and cannon.
