​Avon Dam, located near Bargo in the Wollondilly Shire, is a heritage-listed structure completed in 1927 as part of the Upper Nepean Scheme. Standing 72 metres high and 223 metres long, it holds a capacity of 214,360 megalitres, supplying water to the Illawarra region and parts of metropolitan Sydney. The dam features unique Egyptian Revival architectural elements, including an ornate gateway and landscaped gardens, reflecting its historical significance as a popular 1930s picnic destination. Visitors can enjoy elevated walking paths, shaded picnic areas, and panoramic views of the surrounding bushland and serpentine spillway.
