Description:Peat Island - originally known as Rabbit Island - is a small eight-hectare (20 acre) island in the Hawkesbury River on the northern fringes of Sydney. Throughout the 1900s, it was used as a mental institution until its closure in 2010. The site is now in the process of being re-zoned, with potential plans for riverside housing and a marina. The site comprises the island as well as the foreshore and land on the eastern side of the freeway.
