The Walcha Shire is located in the New England Tablelands region of New South Wales, some 400km north of Sydney.
The town of Walcha (pronounced 'wolka') is 1067 metres above sea level. Walcha can be reached by road, rail and air.
With some 156,000 ha of National Park and natural bushland in the Shire, Walcha has a number of natural highlights. These include the Central Eastern Rainforests Reserves (a World Heritage area), the magnificent Apsley Falls which plummet into the Apsley Gorge from part of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, Tia Falls 44 km east of Walcha, the Macleay Gorges Wilderness Area and the Werrikimbe National Park.
Walcha Shire is also a major hardwood timber producer.
