Wellington Caves Complex

Australia / Wellington, New South Wales
Location ID: #15799

The Wellington Caves Holiday Complex is located 8 km south of Wellington NSW, 4-5 hours drive from Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle. The Complex offers guided tours for two show caves and a mine. Cathedral Cave is the largest and most popular cave, with tour highlights including a 15m stalagmite called the Altar, Thunder Cave, Headache Rock and The Well. Gaden Cave is smaller but has larger amounts of stalactites, cave coral, flowstone and helictites.

The Phosphate Mine operated from 1914 to 1918, mining 6000 tons of phosphate for use as fertiliser. It was refurbished as a tourist attraction in 1995 and opened to the public in 1996. Visible in the mud walls of the mine are the bones of Pleistocene megafauna dating back 2 million years. Some of the first Australian megafauna fossils ever discovered were found in Wellington and even drew the interest of Charles Darwin. PLEASE NOTE: The Phosphate Mine is Temporarily Closed.

The Wellington Caves Complex also features accommodation and facilities, including 36 powered camping sites that can accommodate motorhomes and caravans, 4 park cabins, 7 standard cave units, the Golf View suites, a camp kitchen, a swimming pool with shade sail, amenities block, BBQ facilities, laundry, kiosk, play equipment, dump point, drive thru sites and recreation room. Site is pet friendly (no pets in cabins or units).

The Complex is conveniently located within walking distance of two other major attractions, the Wellington Golf Course and the Osawano Japanese Gardens. Both Wellington Caves and the Osawano Gardens are available for special events such as weddings or concerts.
