Glen Innes

Australia / Glen Innes, New South Wales
Location ID: #15714

Glen Innes is a rural town in the New England high country of NSW. The area is known as the Glen Innes Highlands because of the early European settlers and the verdant countryside reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. The town itself features more than 30 heritage-listed buildings. Just outside of town are the Australian Standing Stones, built as a tribute to the early settlers' Celtic heritage and the site of the annual Australian Celtic Festival in May.

The area is on the Fossickers Ways touring route and nicknamed gemstone country because of the sapphires and other gems discovered. The Glen Innes Visitor Information Centre provides fossicking maps so visitors may try your luck searching for sapphires and other gems.

Other local attractions include the Minerama Fossicking, Gem and Jewellery Show in March, the largest of its kind in NSW, the Land of Beardies History House Museum, the Emmaville Mining Museum, the Country Art Escapes cultural tour and the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

You can travel by air or train from Sydney to Armidale and rent a car or board a bus for Glen Innes. The drive from Sydney is nearly seven hours.
