Location ID: #15362
Captains Flat is a small country town southeast of Canberra, and about 50km southwest of Braidwood. It reached its peak as a mining town in the late 19th century. The tin mine has not been used since the 1960s, but has remained the centre of the town.
Located in a valley, the village comprises quaint weatherboard cottages nestled in the surrounding mountain bushland.
Amenities may be limited due to the small population, the nearest major city is Canberra (45min away).
The Captains Flat area, as with Bungendore, was inhabited by the Ngarigu Aborigines prior to European settlement.
