Wollongong is the third largest city in NSW and, with adjacent Port Kembla, forms a major industrial centre. The main industries are the manufacture of iron & steel, using a plentiful supply of local coal to stoke the furnaces.
The city sits on the coast south of Sydney, below the dramatic backdrop of the Illawarra escarpment. ‘The Gong’ has a significant immigrant population, a university, a fishing harbour and a huge industrial dockland area at neighbouring Port Kembla.
