White Cliffs
Australia / White Cliffs, New South Wales
Location ID: #10990
White Cliffs (with a population varying seasonally from 200-500) is an opal mining town situated approx 100km NW of Wilcannia (40km of the road is dirt), which is in itself 974km NW of Sydney.
From the air, White Cliffs looks like a surreal moonscape, with an estimated 50,000 disused mine diggings, looking like ants nests. All these holes are abandoned opal diggings; White Cliffs’ primary industry is still opal mining.
White Cliffs is also known for its extraordinary solar power station with its 14 huge (diam 5m) parabolic dishes standing in rows against the backdrop of the outback. The look is very sci-fi/ultra-modern/space station.
