The Stockton Dunes are the largest moving coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere and a sacred site for the Worimi traditional landowners. Stretching approximately 34 km, from Anna Bay in Port Stephens to Stockton in Newcastle, and up to 4 km wide in places, the unvegetated dune system provides 80% of Australia's glass mining sand and is the major source of rutile in the world.

Within the traditional lands and waters of the Worimi people is an important strip of land known today as Stockton Bight. Stockton Bight has a special cultural significance to the Worimi people because it contains a large amount of cultural history.

The dunes were used by a group of Worimi Aborigines, the Maiangal, for centuries before European settlement of Australia. The Maiangal were hunter-gatherers and left a legacy of shell middens scattered throughout the dunes as testament to their ties with the area.

This unique location is a favourite with film crews and is 4WD accessible. The sand dunes and landscapes of the Worimi Conservation Lands are amongst the most sought after and active film locations in NSW.
