Premier’s Carriage

Australia / Eveleigh, New South Wales
Location ID: #10671

The Premier’s and Ministerial Inspection is a unique carriage in the NSW Railways system and is one of a small number of carriages which were constructed to this standard of quality in NSW. The interior of the carriage is a rare surviving example of the Edwardian decorative arts as practiced in Australia and represents the epitome of conservative good taste for the period in which it was built. It is representative of government executive accommodation for long-distance railway travel in the early twentieth century in NSW and is a relic of the period when railways provided the primary means of long-distance land travel in Australia.

The car is 21.29m long. One half of the car was used by the Premier and the other by his accompanying Ministers and an attendant. Internally, the car is divided into six spaces. From the attendant’s end there is a shower, attendant’s bedroom, two Minister’s bedrooms flanking a common toilet and shower, the Premier’s room and Lady’s room, each with an ensuite toilet and sharing a shower and a sitting room. A dog-leg corridor links all areas. Passenger entry to the carriage is through a centre door on each side. There is also access from an adjoining carriage on the attendant’s end. The joinery in the hallways is of moulded maple panels. Materials used inside rooms vary and include plastic, vertical wooden slats and moulded wood panels. Ceiling types vary between original pressed metal and acoustic tiles. The floors are covered with a light purple patterned carpet throughout. All widows are pull-up styled and can be covered with blinds. Bedrooms have a pulled-down handbasin with a decorative brass front plate. The kitchen is small and has only basic heating and cooking facilities. The sitting room has a wooden table surrounded by six chairs and a lounge and chair by the walls.
