Old Commissioners Car

Australia / Eveleigh, New South Wales
Location ID: #10647

The Old Commissioner’s Carriage is a unique carriage in the NSW Railways system and is one of only a small number of carriages which were constructed to this standard of quality in NSW. It was reserved for the use of the head of the NSW Railways and Tramways Department and is associated with a series of carriages which were specially built and operated for government executive purposes.

It is 20.47m long, including an end platform at each end. There are a series of single/double windows, each with a crown light along the sides and the exterior is constructed with vertical wooden slats 50mm wide. Entry is only possible via the end platforms, which have iron railings and a brass monogrammed NSWGR incorporated in their centre panels. Movement through the carriage is via a dog-leg corridor. Internally, the car is divided into eight spaces. These are, from one end, a sitting room, an office, the Commissioner’s Bedroom and Lady’s Bedroom, a shower, toilet, another two bedrooms, attendant’s room and another sitting room. The joinery consists of moulded wooden panels throughout, polished and finished to a high standard. Internal glass windows are intricately etched. The windows are fitted with rising shutters or blinds. The ceiling is made of modern acoustic tiles. The floors are covered in colourful patterned carpet and the rooms are lit with original, decorative bulb fixtures. All bedrooms are single berth and feature a pull-down handbasin with a decorative metal plate front. The two bedrooms away from the attendants’ room each also feature a built-in wardrobe.
