Capital of the Hunter region, Newcastle lies within easy reach of Sydney and the major attractions of the Hunter. Newcastle has beaches, a harbour, several walking trails, cafes, and numerous historic buildings.
The city began as a penal colony in 1804, and during the 19th century developed as a coal mining centre and shipping port. The local steelworks was opened by BHP in 1915. By 1938, Newcastle was large enough to be declared a city.
