In colonial days, this 13-hectare island was the headquarters for the Water Police. It was used to keep an eye out for smugglers and escaped convicts.

The island is now open to the public only for tours - to see convict-built sandstone structures, including the convict quarry, Queen's powder magazine, Bony Anderson's couch and other historic sites.
