Uralla

Australia / Uralla, New South Wales
Location ID: #10131093

Uralla is a rural service town almost exactly halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, surrounded by the fertile New England High Country. Uralla boasts a heritage walk showcasing over 50 buildings of historical significance, many of which date from the 1860s. A short stroll around town offers the opportunity to browse the antiquarian bookshop, antique stores, art galleries and specialty stores. Alternatively, visitors can just sit and enjoy a meal at one of the many cafes, or friendly pubs.

Uralla's main claim to fame is its connection to the famous bushranger and outlaw Captain Thunderbolt. The McCrossin's Mill, built in 1870, has been converted into a museum that houses a display of artefacts related to the outlaw. Captain Thunderbolt's body lies in the local cemetery, he has a statue in the main street, and Thunderbolt Rock, the place which he reputedly used for many of his robberies, is only 7 km south of the town.

Uralla is located 451 km north of Sydney via the Pacific Motorway and Thunderbolt's Way, 484 km south-west of Brisbane and 23 km south-west of Armidale.
