A system of railway tunnels, cuttings and stone viaducts, the Zig Zag Railway was built between 1866 and 1869 to overcome the steep descent from the Blue Mountains. It is still used today by the steam engines and vintage rail motors of the Zig Zag Railway.

Zig Zag Railway, Clarence Station is 150 km west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains, 10 km east of Lithgow on Bells Line of Road. Travel time from central Sydney is approximately 2.5 - 3 hours. The railway is signposted at Mount Victoria on the Great Western Highway and at Bell on Bells Line of Road.
There is plenty of parking space at Clarence.
The Zig Zag Historic Railway underwent repairs and restoration after it was heavily damaged by the October 2013 fires.
