Regional Councils - Weddin Shire Council

The Weddin Shire is situated in central NSW, with Grenfell as the main centre. The town of Grenfell has an historic quality and a walk down Main and George Streets is a trip back in Australian history.

The old world character has been maintained with lacework and verandah posts on many of the buildings. Grenfell is situated approximately in the centre of the Shire, with the three outlying villages; Caragabal, Greenethorpe and Quandialla all having their own unique charm. Grenfell is approximately two hours drive from Canberra and four and a half hours drive from Sydney.

The ABC mini series 1915 was filmed in the town of Grenfell and the village of Quandialla, utilising local pubs, the railway station and local street scenes. The countryside is undulating to the east of Grenfell and situated to the west is the Weddin Mountains National Park.

Further westward is flatter terrain towards the drier western inland plains. Features of the Weddin Mountains include the notorious bushranger Ben Hall's cave and the well preserved Seaton's Farm developed from available materials during the depression years.Grenfell is the birthplace of Henry Lawson and holds a festival to celebrate the poet's birth every June long-weekend and this includes a street parade and events such as art and prose competitions and the Guinea Pig Races.
