Regional Councils - Uralla Shire Council

Uralla is situated on the New England Highway, which passes through the centre of town. Many of the buildings in the main street have been listed with the National Trust and similar organisations. Recently a number of verandas have been refurbished and returned to their original state when first built. This gives the street an interesting view and the distinctive feel of the early 1900s. The two hotels retain their facades of the 1880s and the Thunderbolt Inn still has many Victorian features internally. Other buildings in the main street show the march of time from 1870 through to the present day. Scattered throughout the township are many buildings that are fine examples of architectural gems such as the stationmaster's residence and the railway station (1883-1885), post office (1885), Uralla Courthouse (1883-1885) and the Oddfellows Hall (1888), plus many more.McCrossin's Mill is a superbly renovated, 3 story, 1870s flour mill and is now maintained as an award winning museum. It is now the home of Captain Thunderbolt memorabilia, gold rush era, aboriginal diorama and other historical data etc, and is run by the Uralla Historical Society. The Brass and Iron Lace foundry (1872) is still to this day a commercial concern and continues to produce goods in the 'old fashioned way' over the hot coals. The foundry is of weatherboard construction and exudes that long-lost feel of the blacksmith's art, retaining the original moulds for lace work found on Buildings around Uralla and in Sydney Town (Newtown and Balmain). Gostwyck Chapel was built in 1921, in the English tradition and some 200 Elm trees line the road up to and surrounding it. The Chapel itself is covered in Virginia Ivy which turns a glorious red in Autumn along with the Elms, recreating a typically English vision in rural Australia.Salisbury Court, built in the 1840's is a wonderful homestead, surrounded by a garden featured in the Open Garden scheme - it even includes a very English 'ha ha'. This is a working property, and the gracious owners are more than happy to provide stock for 'extras'. This is the perfect setting for a period drama!70km North West of Uralla is the Village of Bundarra that retains a streetscape very similar to that of a stereotypical small country town of the late 1800s and for this reason was chosen for a lot of the filming of The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith. The Mount Drummond School building has been re-sited into town and is maintained as a museum. It is furnished authentically as it would have been in 1916.
