The Shire of Tenterfield is set astride the Great Dividing Range at the northern end of the New England highlands and presents four definite seasons against a backdrop of rugged mountain beauty and in contrast to the serenity of rural landscapes. Tenterfield Shire contains many areas of natural beauty, distinctive historical features and a country warmth and friendliness of its people.The major centre of population in the Shire is the Town of Tenterfield. The Town of Tenterfield is located 770 km north of Sydney and 270 kms south of Brisbane at the junction of the New England and Bruxner Highways. Other centres within the Shire include the villages of Drake, Jennings, Legume, Liston, Torrington and Urbenville. The Shire covers an area of 7,177 sq km. Major natural attractions in the Tenterfield district include Australia's Oldest Cork Tree, Bald Rock National Park, Boonoo Boonoo National Park, Girraween National Park, Torrington State Recreation Area, Glen Lyon Dam and the Rocky River. History buffs can explore the architecture of Tenterfield, which is also known as �The Birthplace of Our Nation� including the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School of Arts, Tenterfield Railway Station, Tenterfield Saddler, Centenary Cottage and more.
