Shoalhaven City is 160km south of Sydney and stretches for a further 160km as the crow flies. It takes in the coast, the fertile plains, the rugged mountain escarpment and the panoramic views of the eastern seaboard. Within the city there are over 300,000 hectares of National Parks and State Forests, there are rivers, coastal lakes, estuaries and many miles of navigable waterways.Stretching from Berry in the north to Durras North in the south, the Shoalhaven offers everything. Keen surfers, divers, swimmers, sailors or sailboarders can choose from any of the 109 beaches in the City. One of these, Hyams Beach, boasts the whitest sand in the world.For a change of scene, the unique terrain of the nearby mountains offers adventure for bushwalkers and canoeists. Bushwalking is a fast growing popular activity in the Shoalhaven.There are restaurants and cafes which boast a smorgasbord of fresh produce from the Shoalhaven. Succulent oysters from Greenwell Point, lobsters from Currarong or fresh fish from Ulladulla are just some of the seafood harvest that abounds in the Shoalhaven.The Beaches.These range from quiet little beaches on our lakes and estuaries to magnificent sweeping surf beaches. Seven Mile Beach at Shoalhaven Heads is grand in its vista and features hard packed sand and rolling surf. Charles Kingsford-Smith chose it as his "take-off" runway for his historic crossing of the Tasman Sea to New Zealand.The beaches around Jervis Bay are like a string of pearls around this Marine Park. Many commercials have been shot on Hyams Beach.Mollymook surf beach is the show-piece of the southern Shoalhaven and is home to state and national Surf Life Saving Championships almost every year.The beaches of Bawley Point, Kioloa, Merry Beach, Pretty Beach, Pebbly Beach, Depot Beach and Durras North are like drops of gold against the magnificent backdrop of Murramarang National Park.The kangaroos of Pebbly Beach are the only kangaroos in Australia that will go surfing!
