Only two and a half hours by expressway from Sydney, population of 55,000, Port Stephens is the Dolphin Capital of Australia. Home to 80 bottle nose dolphins, living in family groups of 5-10, by far the best way to see them is from one of the many dolphin watch cruises. Whale watching is another popular activity. The area offers crystal clear, unpolluted waterways, clean golden beaches and extensive National Parks with unspoilt natural bushland and a native koala population. The magnificent harbour and spectacular scenery, capped by volcanic peaks along the coastline, make it a perfect place to visit any time of year. Port Stephens boasts the NSW coast's biggest sand dune system (adjoining Stanton Beach) and beach vehicle area. All attractions are within 22 minutes' drive of Newcastle Airport (at Williamtown, Port Stephens) with daily flights to and from Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and coastal airports in northern NSW.
