Picturesque valley with good rural and mountain vistas. Two large lakes in close proximity. Industries: fine wool, beef cattle, tourism, grape growing and wine making.Townscapes: Mudgee - uninterrupted streetscapes of colonial public buildings in good order eg Banks, Council Chambers, Churchs. Many National Trust listed.Gulgong - Exceptionally well-preserved gold rush town (featured on the old $10 note). Gulgong Pioneers Museum has a large collection of items covering Australian rural history 1850-1930. These include a Cobb & Co. Coach, farm machinery etc. Rylstone/Kandos - Rylstone, noted for some excellent examples of stone-built colonial architecture and nearby Kandos with its cement works, offers filmmakers a small country townscape set against the spectacular escarpment of the Dividing Range. Nearby Dunns Swamp, a large body of water amongst rugged hills, has been described by some as 'the Kakadu of NSW'.Mid-Western Regional Council incorporates the former Mudgee Council, and parts of the former Rylstone & Merriwa Councils.
