Maitland is the geographical heart of the Hunter, just 30 minutes from Newcastle, Hunter Valley Wine Country, the Barrington Tops and the blue water paradise of Port Stephens. Easily accessible from Sydney on the F3 freeway, Maitland is approximately 90 minutes from North Sydney (175 kms).Maitland's history began long before European settlement, with archaeological evidence supporting the claim that Aboriginal culture has been active in the Hunter for over 15,000 years. Today, the city is a heritage gem, a legacy of the 19th Century colonial period with stately mansions, grand public buildings and churches. Hailed as a spectacular heritage city, Maitland's High Street has been described as "one of the most intact high streets in Australia". It is surrounded by picturesque villages, most notably Morpeth, a charming blend of history and contemporary living, that has been classified by the National Trust. Maitland has retained much of its built heritage, because unlike other places, circumstances intervened to ensure that unnecessary demolition did not occur from undue haste. Maitland Gaol (1848), now a cultural heritage tourism landmark; Alberglasslyn House c.1840s, Tocal Homestead, c. 1830s; are legacies of notable colonial architects such as Verge, Blacket, Mortimer Lewis and Barnet.
