Set in the resource rich Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, Leeton Shire has a strong, diverse agricultural base. Rice growing, horticulture, viticulture, cattle and sheep are the predominant agricultural industries.Leeton is the rice growing capital of Australia, with the Ricegrowers Cooperative located there.The Fivebough Swamp is a significant wetland with up to 20,000 birds migrating to the swamp and is within 5 kilometres of the main street of Leeton. It has recently been declared a RAMSAR SITE which affords it World status.Yanco Agricultural High School is a classic example of the heritage of the area, as it was the original homestead of Sir Samuel McCaughey. This magnificent building has been preserved in original format and functions today as a co-ed boarding high school. Other examples include the Historic Hydro, the Roxy Theatre and the Leeton Visitors Centre. These buildings typify the Council motto of "Preserving the Past, Enhancing the Future."Other attractions in the Shire include recreational pursuits on the Murrumbidgee River, bush walks, Henry Lawson Cottage, Whitton Court House Museum, Yanco Powerhouse Museum, inspections and presentations at food processing facilities as well as tastings and tours at two excellent wineries.Recent films shot in the area include You Can't Push the River, Doing Time for Patsy Cline and the Welsh Film Documentary on the Life of Ellis Williams.
