Regional Councils - Greater Hume Shire Council

The Greater Hume Shire area comprises 5690 square kilometres between the cities of Albury and Wagga Wagga. Its eastern boundary rises in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and its southern boundaries are marked by the foreshores of Lake Hume and the Murray River respectively. The terrain ranges from forested hills in the east, to gently undulating broadacre plains in the west. Approximately 65% of the Shire's population lives in the five main towns and 6 villages. There are 29 communities in total, ranging from under 50 to over 1200, the largest of which are Holbrook, Culcairn, Henty, Jindera and Walla Walla. There are extensive rural areas, with the main rural activities being the grazing of sheep and cattle, and grain growing. Wine grape growing is an emerging component of the agricultural mix in the Shire. The villages provide a range of styles, densities and ages of commercial buildings, along with eight well-established museums. There are many homesteads and pastoral properties within the Shire which have romantic and interesting histories. A visitors guide can be obtained from Council’s website. The close proximity to Albury and Wagga Wagga provides access to a wide range of supplementary services.
