Regional Councils - Edward River Council

Deniliquin Council and Conargo Shire Council have been amalgamated to form the Edward River Council - 2016. - Deniliquin is the Customer service centre for this council. ------------

Deniliquin is a beautiful town situated on the Edward River, in the centre of the Riverina sheep station country. It is here that Australia learnt to ride on the sheep's back, and the historic homesteads and heritage listed buildings of the outstations are evidence of the early wealth and aristocracy here. The town itself has a surprising number of beautifully restored buildings from the early 1800s and Federation era and its wide verandah lined streets are gracefully dotted with pepper trees and river gums providing welcome relief from the hot summer sun. Deniliquin is also on the fringe of Australia's largest red gum forest where bird and wildlife abound. Opening up to the north of Deniliquin is the beginning of the outback, where the vast rolling plains stretch to the never-never land of saltbush and mirages, of sandhill and boree country. Steam Plains a little to the north of the world famous Conargo Hotel (40kms North of Deniliqiun) is famed as the flattest country on the earth, it is said that out here the interrupted view of vastness allows you to actually see the arc of the earth with the naked eye. We like to think we're an oasis on the edge of the outback and each year we play host to 10,000 or more loyal worshippers of the Aussie ute. For a real spectacle come and see thousands of utes of every age, make and size lined up on the plains. Some have travelled from every region on the Australian map just to be a part of The Plains Festival and the World Record Ute Muster and to enjoy a weekend of Australia's best country music.
