Regional Councils - Bourke Shire Council

Bourke is an oasis in the outback of New South Wales which is 'on a roll'. Almost $1 million is earned each year from table grapes, citrus, rock melons, wine grapes, cotton, wheat stone fruits, jojoba and peanuts - also sheep and cattle. The history of Bourke includes Aboriginal tribes harvesting grass seeds at the time the white man arrived and non-Aboriginal groups are currently developing interpretive centres to tell the history of culture, language and contribution to the development of the Outback.Bourke was used as the setting for the mini-series Kings in Grass Castles and Robbery Under Arms. The Back O'Bourke Exhibition Centre has now been constructed and houses a high-tech audio visual display which depicts "a Billabong 110 years long". The Centre focuses on Bourke's rich history beginning with amazing stories from 250 years ago through to the research and development into environmental sustainability for Bourke's future.
